Our client recognizes that delivering effective and respectful services requires a deep understanding of the diverse communities they serve, particularly the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
To strengthen their commitment and enhance outreach, we are excited to introduce the Financial Counsellor vacancy. This position is integral to the mission of the organisation, ensuring that services are accessible, culturally sensitive, and supportive for all survivors.
The Financial Counsellor will provide a range of assistance dependent on the individual needs of the client. This may include assistance with debts and hardship issues, discussions on how a redress payment may affect the client’s financial situation, discussion around the protection and management of a lump sum payment.
The financial counsellor will also be involved in providing information and training to other organisations that support people applying for NRS or TSGRS payments.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Build financial resilience by working with clients to improve their financial capability and empowering them to develop strategies and goals about what they want to achieve with their payment.
- Provide information, options, practical assistance and advocacy to address clients’ financial issues and alleviate financial burden, particularly where there is a risk that creditors will attempt to access the payment for existing debts.
- Provide information and strategies to clients to maximise the benefit and minimise potential negative impacts of receiving a NRS or TSGRS payment. This includes advice on the impact of receipt of a redress payment on existing government payments and entitlements, as well as advice on how to maintain special protections for redress payments.
- Discuss options to assist clients to protect their payments from economic abuse, elder abuse, scams etc.
- Build capacity across the financial counselling sector to support survivors and respond to the financial issues relevant to the client group.
- Contribute to the cilent's community education and engagement activities and the preparation of materials.
- Contribute to the client's systemic advocacy work, including law reform and policy and procedural initiatives relevant to the client group.
- Maintain client records and documentation within requirements and timelines.
Qualifications
- Diploma of Financial Counselling or Diploma of Community Services (Financial Counselling)
- Current member of the relevant state financial counselling peak body.
- A satisfactorily National Police Records Check and a Working with Children Check.
- Current Driver's License and the ability and willingness to travel
- Excellent record in providing quality financial counselling to vulnerable clients and an understanding of the effects of trauma for individuals and families.
- Knowledge of relevant State and Federal credit, debt and social security legislation.
- Understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and experience in providing culturally safe services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
- Demonstrated ability to work flexibly, collaboratively and effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team, as well as with external stakeholders.
- High level written (case notes, letter writing) and verbal skills with strong interpersonal communication abilities.
